STATE, The Operating System You Never Knew You Had, book cover by Dr. Josh McWealth Unamba

“Dr. Josh Unamba has created an original and practical framework that thoughtfully integrates principles of Polyvagal Theory with contemporary neuroscience to help readers better understand how physiological state influences leadership, relationships, and performance. S.T.A.T.E. offers an accessible guide for cultivating greater self-awareness, resilience, and authentic engagement with others.”

Stephen W. Porges, PhD, originator of Polyvagal Theory

The S.T.A.T.E. Framework

Sense

Notice what is happening in your body before your mind catches up, using interoception (your body’s ability to read its own internal state) instead of overriding it.

Track

Watch your nervous system state as a pattern across a day or a week rather than judging yourself by any single moment. Regulation is about having access to choice, not about staying calm.

Attune

Your nervous system state is not private. It is a signal the people around you register and respond to, which is why the most regulated person in a room tends to set its tone.

Transform

Which version of you shows up (patient, defensive, generous, reactive) depends on where you are on the stress continuum in a given moment, not on a fixed trait of your character.

Encode

A regulated nervous system state is what allows an experience to be recorded as memory, which is why chronic dysregulation can leave you living through a life without registering it.

At the center of S.T.A.T.E. is a simple sequence: state sets the frame, frame sets the focus.

Willpower and mindset advice run into a hard biological limit under real pressure. When your nervous system reads threat, the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) activates and releases stress hormones that are not under direct voluntary control. That same threat response narrows prefrontal function, the exact resource that planning, patience, and clear judgment depend on. You cannot instruct that system to stand down with a thought. Change what your body is reporting first, and the frame available to your thinking changes with it, which is what determines what you are able to focus on next.
